Act II — The Ascent

Chapter 5: The Richmond Circle

The Founders' supper and Inanna's late-night knock

The Founders' Supper: Inanna at the threshold of the study in gold silk

Premise

Driving south to the ten-thousand-acre Virginia estate, Thomas enters the commune's orbit. Late that night, while the estate sleeps, Inanna arrives at the founders' study in gold silk to report on Maya's new recruit.

From the Manuscript

The knock came soft. Three times. The patience of someone who would wait as long as it took.

Selene was still in Rue's arms. The house had gone quiet — south wing dark, nothing stirring behind the garden latch. Rue lifted her head.

"Inanna," she said.

Selene reached for the ivory robe at the foot of the bed. Rue pulled midnight silk from the chair.

They met each other at the study door, composed the way founders composed themselves when the house needed them dressed.

"Come in, Inanna," Selene said.

The handle turned.

Inanna stood in the threshold in Rank 9 gold — heavy silk, dark hair loose, nothing in her hands. Forty, olive-skinned, bone structure that read as old money made flesh. Still. The stillness of someone who had already spent the path in her mind and had nothing left to spend.

Her dark eyes moved across the study once. The lamp low. Rue and Selene in founder's silk, the hour of the night on both of them. She took it in completely, without comment, and waited.

Selene felt something pull in her chest. This woman who had sat across from them nine years ago and said *when do we begin* before they had finished asking. Who had given them everything and had never asked for anything in return except to be inside the thing and be seen.

Inanna came in. Took the chair that faced them directly. Folded her hands in her lap. Her eyes settled on Selene first, then Rue, then back — acknowledging what was between them without naming it.

"I was at your table tonight," she said. "I left when they needed the room without me."

Selene nodded. Rue's hand found hers on the arm of the chair.

"You saw what I saw," Inanna said. "He wanted a map. He took the chair. Maya kept her hand on him where we could all see it." A pause. "He is not running."

"He went still when you named his parish," Rue said.

"Yes." Inanna's dark eyes held hers. "Father Benedict at St. Christopher's was my father's contact. The connection passed to me when the estate did." The faintest movement at the corner of her mouth. "I made calls after evening prayer — after I left the dining room, before the south wing went quiet. He does not know what I learned. He only knows I knew his room."

She let that sit.

"Maya's man," Inanna said. "Thomas." A beat. "What follows is not for his ears. Not yet."
