Act IV — The Conclusion

Chapter 12: The Promotion

The secondary facility and the descent

Selene by the Study Window: secondary facility and the cold descent chamber

Premise

At the far edge of the estate, in a utilitarian secondary facility of concrete and drains, Valen witnesses the unvarnished reality of the Order's lower tier—the physical prerequisite required to cross into Rank Nine.

From the Manuscript

Inside, the air hit colder than the sanctum and smaller than the hall — concrete, drains, candle sconces that made restraints look like something other than medicine until you'd seen what the grate was for.

The man on the table was awake.

County denims cut away at the shoulders. Wrists and ankles in leather. Gag buckled tight — leather strap, mouth forced open around the rubber wedge, saliva dark at the chin. Chest heaving against the straps. Eyes wide, wet, tracking the door when it opened — animal math, not prayer. No Mastery band. No name the hall would ever speak.

Not sedated. Not sacrament-sweet. Conscious.

Valen's stomach turned once. He filed it. The Witnessing didn't get to flinch on the threshold.

Mara shut the door behind them. Latch click. August gone. Only function.

She opened the ledger at the side table — green ink, time stamp, compliance block — eyes on the paper while the man made a sound behind the gag that wasn't words.

"Hundreds take the dose," she said. Chunk-flat. Instructor. Not sermon. "Warden lane doesn't."

Valen watched her.

"Outside-sourced." She capped the pen without looking at the subject. "Men who already descended in life. The county wrote them off. We don't pretend they're Light." Her dark eyes on the heaving chest. "He needs to feel the cast-out. Completion isn't charity for this file."

Believer-clean. The frame doing what the frame was for. Not vengeance in her mouth — theology. Valen felt his thighs lock anyway.

"He'll fight the blade," she said. "You'll hold anyway."

She lifted the steel from the tray. Edge checked — unhurried, no theatre. Warm metal against her palm when she turned it and set the hilt into his grip. His knuckles thick. Honest. Welder's knuckles. Scar line under her thumb when she adjusted the wrap.

"Wrist straight. You'll want to rush when he jerks. Don't."

Foot correction. Hip correction. Margin chalk on the stone — witness lane for her today, cutter for him.

"Weight in the soles. Knees soft. Breathe — four in. Hold."

She stepped back.

"Cast out now," she said to the drain. Flat. "We finish what the outside started."

The man's eyes found Valen's face. Plea without language. Valen's chest expanded once. Held.

*Did Eros fight?* The hearth question pressed his teeth — February, Maya at the fire, name cleared while he ate eggs. He didn't ask Mara. Asking would make it his room in a way the Witnessing couldn't unfile.

"Whenever you're ready," Mara said.
